WAYNE Tighe is a proud Maude Street old-boy – a kid from Soapie Row.

Moree born-and-bred, Mr Tighe has worked and lived in the shire his entire life and humbly wears many hats.

He’s employed as facilities co-ordinator with TAFE NSW, managing nine campuses across the north-west region, and also sits on the Moree Tourism board and Bank Art Museum Moree committee.

When he finds an opportunity to relax and unwind, he usually volunteers his time helping oversee social bowls at Moree Services Club, where he is a valued member of Moree Magpies bowls team.

On January 26, Mr Tighe was named Moree Plains Citizen of the Year for his tireless work in the local community.

And his love of Moree is the impetus behind his decision to stand as a candidate in the 2024 local government elections.

“I am standing because I am very passionate about the prosperity and development of our town, surrounding villages and communities,” Mr Tighe said.

“Our towns and villages are entitled to have a united Council that is committed to support growth.

“This support should be for all residents, locally owned businesses, large and small, and sporting and community clubs that choose to call Moree Plains their home,” he said.

Mr Tighe is deeply concerned about community safety amid juvenile crime.

“I want to see our communities thrive and be a safe place to live,” he said.

“I support the initiatives Moree Plains Shire Council and Premier Chris Minns have delivered to the community and will continue to push for continued and ongoing support from all government and community organisations on this very important matter.

“We must get this crime problem under control so we can have a safe and harmonious community to live in,” Mr Tighe said.

He said local businesses and industries, especially farming-related enterprises, need to be prioritised.

“Moree’s economy rides largely on the success of agriculture and the seasons, and the industries and supply chains that go with it,” Mr Tighe said.

“It is important Council supports this sector in all decision-making. Having said that, Council should take decision-making very seriously and strive to be transparent when conducting all business for the betterment of our communities.”

Mr Tighe commends all candidates for supporting their communities, “throwing their hat in the ring” and adding value and strength to shire towns and villages.

“I also acknowledge these community roles are not for everybody, and ask community members to support their elected Councillors in their endeavours supporting and growing our communities,” Mr Tighe said.
