THE fluoridation of the Ashford water supply is set to commence in early 2025, marking the culmination of a process that began more than 15 years ago.

Inverell Shire Council is preparing to notify the Ashford community of the upcoming introduction of fluoride, which aims to improve oral health outcomes for residents.

The fluoridation project was first approved by Council in July 2007, followed by public consultation and approval from NSW Health in 2010.

A new water treatment plant, incorporating a fluoridation system, was completed in March 2016. NSW Health issued final approval in February 2024.

Inverell Shire mayor Kate Dight said fluoridate of the Ashford water supply has been a long and involved journey.

“But we are excited to take this final step towards implementing fluoride in Ashford’s water supply,” Cr Dight said.

Fluoridation is a proven and safe way to support better oral health for our community.”

In preparation for the roll-out, Council will engage with the community through letterbox drops, social media, Council website, local online classifieds, and radio.

These efforts aim to inform residents about the benefits of fluoridation and provide updates on the project’s timeline.

Council will service the fluoridation equipment to ensure it is ready for operation.

Once preparations are complete, Council will advise residents of the specific start date.

Fluoride was introduced into the Inverell Water supply in the early 1980s.

Fluoridation of water supplies has been endorsed by leading health authorities, including NSW Health, as a key public health measure to reduce tooth decay.

With the Ashford community set to benefit, Council remains committed to ensuring a smooth implementation process.
