PETER Winkley had a simple message that spoke volumes when he was named Volunteer of the Year at the Moree Plains Shire Australia Day awards ceremony at Jellicoe Park on Sunday.
Mr Winkley, whose tireless efforts truly symbolise the very essence of volunteering, spoke quietly but passionately when Moree Plains mayor Susannah Pearse congratulated the Moree rugby grounds caretaker – a role he goes about quietly and without fanfare.
“I think people should do the things they enjoy. The ones that aren’t standing up here, I commend you for doing that and enjoying what you’re doing,” Mr Winkley said.
“There must be so many people that don’t get the opportunity to be nominated for these awards, but are doing things that they like to do, to maybe make someone’s life better.”
Mr Winkley also volunteers at the Moree golf course and allocates much of his free time to cleaning headstones and gardening at Moree Cemetery. When Moree Plains Museum needed a hand installing a new stairway to the imposing building’s main entrance, Mr Winkley stepped up.
Cr Pearse said Mr Winkley’s role at the Weebolla Bulls rugby grounds was tirelessly undertaken on a purely voluntary basis.
“Peter’s role as caretaker is entirely unpaid and he’s known for his unwavering commitment to keeping things running smoothly,” Cr Pearse said.
“He also lends his green thumb to the golf course, ensuring it’s beautifully maintained and devotes time to the Moree Cemetery, honouring those who’ve come before us.

Peter and Loren Winkley at the Australia Day awards ceremony. Mr Winkley was named Moree Volunteer of the Year.
“When the new museum needed assistance with building work, Peter didn’t hesitate to step in and lend a hand.
“On top of all this, Peter last year coached the women’s rugby union team – testament to his dedication to fostering community spirit and empowering others.
“Peter Winkley is truly the heart and soul of Moree. His involvement and unwavering dedication are unbelievable, and he perfectly embodies the qualities we celebrate with this award,” Cr Pearse said.
Mr Winkley was humble and lost for words when accepting his award.
“I can’t believe I’m shaking,” he smiled.
“I congratulate all the nominees. We have a business in Moree and we have the opportunity to give something back. My wife, Loren, and I wanted to give back to Moree, as a lot of people do.
“This award is very much appreciated and I’d like to personally thank all the people out there that go unacknowledged. Well done to them,” he said.
