UP to 70mm of rain is likely to fall across the north-western part of New South Wales over several days later this week as tropical cyclone Alfred tracks towards the eastern seaboard.
Several weather channels have good rainfall slotted for the Moree region from Friday onwards, including up to 30mm on Saturday, February 8.
Similar falls are expected across the northern tablelands and new England regions.
Coastward, severe storms and big falls are expected, especially for Brisbane, with more than 200mm forecast and possible flooding.
The NSW State Emergency Service is warning residents in north-eastern New South Wales and coastal regions to prepare for damaging winds, large surf and heavy rainfall, with Alfred expected to cross the coast later this week.
Major riverine flooding and flash flooding is possible along the northern rivers and mid-north coast from Wednesday through to at least the weekend.
More than 200mm is forecast for Grafton across several days and upwards of 300mm at Coffs Harbour from Wednesday through to early next week.
NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Dean Storey said now was the time for residents to prepare.
“The impacts of the cyclone may be felt from Tuesday with damaging winds, large powerful surf, coastal erosion, followed by intense and heavy rainfall from Wednesday onwards,” Mr said.
“If major flooding occurs, people may be asked to evacuate their homes. We are asking the community to take steps now to ensure that if you are asked to evacuate you have a plan for yourselves, your families and your pets and know where you will go.”
The BoM says the southern Queensland and north-east New South Wales areas will experience coastal impacts, with possible gales and heavy rainfall from as early as Wednesday.
In a media statement issued Monday, NSW Premier Chris Minns said Cyclone Alfred is expected to impact the coast of New South Wales later this week.
“It’s important the public prepare for possible damaging winds, coastal erosion and potentially major flooding,” Mr Minns said.
“The NSW SES will be mobilising many resources to respond to these conditions and we ask that you assist them by making sensible decisions for you and your families.”
