IT gets bigger each year.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Moree Services Club memorial window early today to commemorate Anzac Day.
They stood silent, heads bowed, and remembered them.
Anzac Day master of ceremonies Roger Butler told the gathering how at this hour, upon this day, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, received its baptism of fire to become an immortal name in history.
“We who are gathered here remember the comrades who went to the battlefields of all wars, but did not return,” Mr Butler said.
“We feel them still near us in spirit. We wish to be worthy of their great sacrifice.
“Let us therefore once more, dedicate ourselves to the ideals for which they died.
“AS the dawn is now about to pierce the night, so let their memory inspire us to work for the coming of new light into the dark places of the world.”
A wreath-laying ceremony followed the Lament, played pipe sergeant, Ben Hunt, from Moree Caledonian Society Pipes and Drums.
The Last Post was sounded by bugler, Jacqualyn Lillyman, followed by one minute’s silence to honour the fallen in all global conflicts.
Earlier, Abide With Me was led by Steve McPherson and Moree and District Band, with prayers led by RSL chaplain, Reverend Geoff Hearne.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest We Forget.
