Moree Boars ladies overcome slow start to beat Dungowan Cowgirls

May 13, 2025

MOREE Boars ladies tackle kept their unbeaten record intact when taking finals’ honours against Dungowan Cowgirls, 24-16, at a magical Magic Round at Tamworth’s Scully Park on Saturday.

Aleah Peckham landed two tries and one goal, with captain Kaya Williams and Maddie Martin each scoring tries.

Dungowan took an early lead in the opening minutes when hooker Jayda Simpson crashed through right of the uprights off a Bonni Porter play-the-ball.

The try, converted by Taylor Holcombe, gave Dungowan a 6-nil lead but Moree levelled the score when Aleah Peckham crashed through the defence to score left of the uprights.

Moree went further in front in the opening minutes of the second half when Stacey McIntosh grounded the ball.

Less than five minutes later, Aleah Peckham collared her second try to give Moree a 20-6 lead.

The Cowgirls rallied late in the second half, with Shonriqua Hippi scoring in the final minutes, her second try for the match.

Moree coach Chris Swan said Peckham had a big game.

“Aleah plays well. She’s been right into her footy since she was young, and has played in a few different competitions at places like Tweed Heads and Toowoomba,” Swan said.

“Aleah’s got a bit of football behind her, and she’s got the breeding,” Swan smiled.

“She’s a good half-back or five-eighth, has a football brain, and slotted straight in.

“But it’s all a team effort. Some of the players stand out, but everyone has their role to do and as long as they play well as a team, everything falls into place for them.”

Swan said Moree overcame a slow start when starved for the ball, but rallied late.

“They bided their time and weathered the storm until they got a bit of ball, and then everything started going to plan,” Swan said.

“Once they got into their rhythm and the way they wanted to play, everything fell into place. It was a good team effort all over the park.

“It all comes down to having the right attitude with everyone in it for the team, and not themselves.

“I’m so proud of the girls and what they’ve done the last couple of months, and the team they’ve become in such a short space of time,” he said.
