Historic first home games for Moree Giants girls tackle

May 15, 2025

FROM little things, big things grow – and the Moree Giants have grown.

This year marks the first season of ladies tackle in rugby league, and on Saturday at Boughton Oval, Moree Junior Rugby League Giants will field its first girls tackle games at home as part of the Group 4 junior rugby league competition.

Moree club president Steve Cory said the 11-round competition will be followed by quarter- and semi-finals across three age groups – 13-years, 15-years and 17-years.

“The numbers are pretty good for the first year of girls’ tackle in Group 4 junior league – we have great numbers for all age groups,” Cory said.

“We’ve made the leap into Group 4 because Group 19 at this stage does not offer girls tackle, only league tag.

“This has not been a problem for our club, and the girls and their parents have embraced it,” he said.

“Judging by the girls in our lower ages who were playing with the boys, I think our numbers will keep growing as girls’ tackle becomes more popular.”

Cory said girls tackle is a concept that will grow from one season to the next.

“I think it’s great for the future of rugby league In the bush,” he said.

Paul Spearim, Jason Brown and Wade Taylor have stepped up to coach the Moree teams.

“Paul, Jason and Wade have been fantastic, and put their hands up to help us get this off the ground,” Cory said.

“The club is especially grateful to Jason and Paul, because neither of them have daughters playing in any age groups.

“This shows just how passionate they are are about getting this off the ground,” he said.

Cory also thanked Group 4 Junior Rugby League for having faith in Moree Giants.

“As a junior rugby league club, the Giants are forever thankful to Group 4 for giving us the opportunity to be a part of the competition,” he said.

“This Saturday is an important day for the club, and it’s great we’re creating a little piece of history.

“I encourage everyone to come down and support our young girls at their first home game in Moree,” Cory said.
