Moree Boars second-grade win again after scrappy first half – again

Jun 2, 2025

IT was a case of same play, different day for Moree Boars second-grade after they overcame a sloppy first half to comfortably beat North Tamworth Bears 34-10 in Group 4 rugby league at Jack Woolaston Oval on Saturday.

Like previous matches, the Boars were messy during the first half, but a few stern words from coach Alf Newman and team manager Charlie Shearer during the break got the team back on track.

“We started our game like we have the last couple of weeks – scrappy – but another half-time rev-up led our men to another win for the season,” Shearer said.

“We played as a team in the second half and showed what we can do.”

Shearer said the game was marred by injuries to Moree players.

“Late in the second half, Steve Le Milliere suffered what looks to be a broken collarbone and Layne Raveneau unfortunately got knocked out while going in for a try in the second half,” Shearer said.

“Luke McDonald copped a bit of a stinger due to friendly fire from another team-mate.”

Moree Boars second-grade team manager Charlie Shearer at a home game earlier this year.

Coach Alf Newman said the first half was “scrappy again” despite Moree going to the break in front.

“We scored the first two tries and got off to a great start, but lacked the defence to stop them from scoring,” Newman said.

“Charlie and I gave the boys a spray and the second half was a whole lot better. They completed well, and deserve the win.”

Latrel Newman had a blinder on the boot, kicking five goals. Tries went to fullback Dereik

Newman, winger Dylan Green, interchange Daniel Townsend and lock Cody Picker, with halfback Jamal Woodbridge crossing twice.

Centre Dermott Fields and second-rower Jack Coombes scored first-half tries for the Bears, with captain Jarmarley Jerrard kicking North Tamworth’s only goal.

“Admittedly, North Tamworth had a lot of ball all game, but our defence was better, and we kept them scoreless in the second half,” Shearer said.

“We played really well up the middle, when we stuck to playing football there.

“I thought our stand-out players were Rob Wade, Stan Smith and Dan Townsend, but I’m happy with all the boys’ performances,” he said.

“Our undefeated streak remains, which keeps us on top of the ladder.

“The team gets a well-earned rest due to the long weekend bye, and we’ll be back into it the following week against Wee Waa,” he said.
