AT the July Council meeting on Thursday, a resolution was passed that Moree Plains Shire Council proceed with Taylor Oval as the planned site for the new Moree Aquatic Centre.
During the meeting, a report from NSW Public Works regarding Site Feasibility for Taylor Oval was presented to Council.
The report stated “Taylor Oval is a suitable location for the proposed new pool, given its connectivity to the town centre, its proximity to the existing sporting and community infrastructure and the local schools”.
Moree Plains Shire mayor Susannah Pearse said the study was a step in the right direction and allowed Council to continue with existing plans for Taylor Oval as the site for the new pool.
“This study concluded that Taylor Oval is a suitable and feasible location for our new swimming pool, which is really positive,” Cr Pearse said.

A Moree Plains Shire Council resolution has been passed that council proceed with Taylor Oval as the planned site for the new Moree Aquatic Centre.
“Council is aware of how passionate our community is about our pool and how important it is to have somewhere to swim – especially for children who are learning this vital life skill.
“We are pleased to have a number of scenarios to ensure Taylor Oval moves forward as the site.
“In terms of next steps to getting final approval for Taylor Oval as the site for our new pool, the report from NSW Public Works recommended Council consult Heritage NSW and we will proceed based on that recommendation.”
In considering the matter, Council noted the extensive work undertaken in reviewing the site’s cultural heritage – which resulted in the state-approved rezoning more than a decade ago – and has requested Heritage NSW consider that prior work in a review of the current registration.
If Heritage NSW approves Council’s request, next steps will be to undertake additional engineering investigations and consider concept options for design of the new pool.

Does anyone on the present council have any fond memories of time spent at Taylor oval? Many sports days, including the special sports celebrating the Queen’s Coronation, in 1954, visits from people like Sir Roden Cutler, where all school children assembled and happy days watching inter town matches of other sports. This oval is part of our tradition, why can’t it stay and be celebrated with a great makeover I.e. new fencing, landscaping and become the beautiful place it used to be. A lot cheaper than the proposed aquatic centre.
I was born in Moree and lived there for the first 29 years of my life. During my life time in Moree I was a member of the Moree swimming club and also the Moree Diggers Swimming Club. The worst decision I have ever seen in my life is when the council demolished the old swimming pools and grand stand for the most stupid establishment that is called the Moree Aquatic Centre. And to think the council now want to move the Olympic pool to Taylor Oval even makes less sense with the railway and all the purpose built small Motels all on the east side of town. In my opinion I think the towns people should have some input into where the New Aquatic Centre should be built as Taylor Oval is a very bad choice , Is the waste water still to be pumped to the ski park and the hot water overflow was always pumped into the Olympic pool so the swimmers could train all year round
