Moree firies recruiting on-call staff

Oct 2, 2025

THE call-up is on for new staff to join Moree Fire Brigade as on-call firefighters.

On-call firefighters work from their local Fire and Rescue NSW Fire Station and are responsible for undertaking a wide range of duties, including community fire safety work, attending fires and other emergencies such as motor vehicle accidents or chemical hazards.

They are also called on to deliver community education programs on fire prevention and safety for school children, senior citizens and local businesses, and collaborate with other emergency services, including NSW Ambulance, NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Police.

The Moree station is staffed by a team of permanent firefighters who are backed up by on-call fire-fighters – men and women who hold down regular jobs but are there when needed.

There are positions now available to join the on-call ranks.

The call-up is on for new staff to join Moree Fire Brigade as on-call firefighters.

Moree on-call captain Blake Cosgrove said on-call firefighters are paid for attending incidents, training sessions, as well as community safety and education activities.

“We’d love some more on-call staff in Moree, and anyone interested can hop online to the fire and rescue website and put in an application,” he said.

Mr Cosgrove encourages anyone interested to drop into the Moree station to collect some and have a chat.

Senior Moree firefighter, Mark Cahill, said many full-time firefighters began as on-call firefighters.

“I started as an on-call officer – back when they were called retained firefighters – and came up through the ranking system that way,” he said.

On-call firefighters play a crucial role in protecting people, property and the environment in their local communities. To be successful in the role, applicants need to be team-oriented, community-focused, adaptable and reliable.

Essential requirements include a valid New South Wales driver’s licence, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency. Training is provided on an ongoing basis and covers all aspects of firefighting and rescue including basic life support, rope work, power tool use and community engagement skills.

“Ideally, on-call firefighters need to be available across weekdays and/or weekends,” Mr Cosgrove said.

There is day and night work involved and those interested must live or work within a reasonable distance of Moree Fire Station.”
