SIENA Grima’s have-saddle-will-travel approach to race-riding steps up a notch at Muswellbrook today, where she has three rides on the seven-race card leading into Melbourne Cup week.
Grima won on Crimson Bonnet at Moree on Friday for Tamworth trainer Sue Grills. She then headed to Randwick on Saturday for one ride, finishing third on Chris Waller’s Belle Detelle in the 1500m Asahi Super Dry Handicap.
Today at Muswellbrook, Grima rides Andrew MacDonald’s Power Through in the 1750m class 1 and maiden plate; Magnolia Jewel for Tracey Bartley in the 1000m class 1 handicap and Troy O’Neile’s Ropewalker in the 1500m maiden handicap.
Grima will enjoy some well-deserved downtime on Monday before returning to Randwick on Tuesday for the huge Big Dance meeting.
Grima has rides in two of the three ‘dances’, and is waiting to hear which race David Hatch’s Ring Ahoy will target.

Ring Ahoy, winner of last year’s Armidale Cup with Grima on board, is assured of a start in the $750,000 Little Dance, but is also second emergency for the $3 million Big Dance.
Grima also rides Brett Robb’s Kosciuszko runner-up Gallant Star in the $250,000 Barn Dance, with the Randwick meeting looming as her biggest day at the track in a career that started at a non-TAB meeting at Deepwater early last year.
Hatch also legs Grima aboard Enniroc in the 1000m TAB Highway Handicap and Mitch Beer has booked the gun apprentice for Gunroom in the 1300m Quayclean Handicap.
“It’s a really exciting opportunity to be riding at Randwick on Melbourne Cup day and I’m really grateful for the rides I’ve been given,” Grima said.
Grima waited nearly all day to get a winner at Moree on Friday, but got the job done in perfect fashion on Sue Grills’ consistent mare Crimson Bonnet in the 1200m Tradies BM-66 Handicap.
“Sue said not to hit the button until I needed it,” Grima said.
“The horse inside had a bit of a dig and fired my horse up a bit. I settled her and kept her calm, and let her find the line under her own steam.
“She finished off the race well. I wasn’t too far back, maybe three or four pairs and one off.
“I left myself the option to go either inside or outside, and the outside seemed to be the way to go on the day so I stayed there. It was a good win,” Grima said.
Crimson Bonnet ($2.70fav) charged home to score by a head from Nuts ‘n’ Bolts ($21), with Purple Esprit ($5.590) half-a-length away third.
Grills has trained five winners in the last two weeks – Inverell, Armidale, Moree and a double at Coonabarabran last Sunday – and praised Grima’s ride on Crimson Bonnet on Friday.
“It was a very nice win, and Siena rode her really well. She let the speed go, which suits the horse, and hit the line really well,” Grills said.
“Crimson Bonnet is no superstar, but she’s honest and she tries hard.”
Meanwhile, Moree old boy Clayton Gallagher returned home on Friday for an easy win on Marnoo in the 1600m Moree Mile Class 2 Handicap.
Marnoo ($4.40), trained at Gilgandra by Keiren Hazelton, charged home to score by nearly two lengths from Fulmen Filou ($12), with Eject ($8) half-a-length away third.
“He let down quite nicely and I had a lap full of horse coming to the turn,” Gallagher said.
“He got into a nice momentum and as soon as the field opened up, he attacked the line – it was a nice win,” he said.
