Walgett: Teen charged after attempted break-and-enter

A teenager faced court on Tuesday, charged after an attempted break-and-enter in Walgett this week.

At about 8pm on Monday, a group of four youths allegedly attempted to enter a property on Montkeila Street, Walgett, forcing open the rear screen door.

After allegedly attempting to gain access through a second rear door, the group – allegedly armed with screwdrivers – returned to the front of the home, before fleeing the scene.

A woman in her 70s was inside the home at the time. She was uninjured during the incident.

Following inquiries, at about 9.40pm on Monday officers attached to Central North Police District attended a home on George Sands Way, Walgett, where they arrested a 14-year-old boy.

He was charged with enter prescribed premises of any person without lawful excuse, enter building/land with intent to commit indictable offence, and breach of bail.

He was refused bail and attended a children’s court on Tuesday, where he was granted conditional bail to appear at a children’s court on Thursday, December 18.

Inquiries under Operation Soteria are continuing.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, a man and a teenager have faced court, charged after an alleged break-and-enter incident at Broken Hill.

At about 6am on Sunday, officers attached to Barrier Police District were called to a home on Wills Lane, Broken Hill, with reports of a break, enter and steal.

Upon arrival, police were told unknown people had forced entry into the locked home and into sheds on the property, between 9pm Saturday and 6am Sunday.

Police will allege the group stole an amount of money and power tool batteries.

A crime scene was established and an investigation commenced.

At about 1.30am on Monday, police were patrolling a caravan park on Rakow Street when they located and spoke to a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man.

They were both arrested, before being taken to Broken Hill Police Station and each charged with aggravated break-and-enter with intent – in company – steal.

The 16-year-old boy was refused bail and appeared before a children’s court on Monday.

The 18-year-old man was refused bail and appear before Broken Hill Local Court on Monday.

The alleged stolen items were recovered by police and seized for forensic examination.

Investigations are continuing.
