THREE celebrations were held across Inverell Shire on Monday, where several locals were recognised for their achievements in the community with Australia Day awards.

Alistair Williams’ 40 years of commitment, passion, devotion and selflessness for the Inverell community saw him awarded Inverell’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year.

Delungra local, Tom Retallack, was recognised for his commitment to the community and awarded Delungra Citizen of the Year.

Azariah Dewberry was named Young Citizen of the Year and Delungra Hotel – Shear 4 Life was awarded Community Group of the Year.

An inspiring win for the Tingha community with sisters Bridgette and Tabatha Jerrard jointly awarded Tingha Australia Day Citizen of the Year, with the Tingha Tigers Ladies League Tag Team being named Sports Team of the Year.

Inverell Shire Council mayor, Kate Dight, said Australia Day is a time to reflect, respect and celebrate. “It is a chance for us to reflect on the past, present and future, and a chance for us to listen to each other’s stories, contributions and aspirations,” Cr Dight said.

Each year the Australia Day committee calls for nominations of local legends who devote their time and efforts to the Inverell community.

“Huge congratulations to our fantastic and extremely worthy Australia Day nominees, your hard work, dedication and commitment to our community have been duly recognised,” Cr Dight said.

“We warmly congratulate all recipients of the Australia Day Awards. We are thrilled to recognise all the hard work and commitment these winners have given to our communities.”

With special guests Brendan Moylan and Australia Day Ambassador Emma Rossi in attendance, Inverell Shire Council hosted a fabulous Australia Day celebration breakfast prepared by Macintyre Lions Club in Victoria Park.

Dinner festivities and live entertainment were held at the Sport and Recreation Club in Tingha.

“It was terrific to see so many people come out to support our community and appreciate the wonderful society in which we live,” Cr Dight said.

“We all belong to, and contribute, to our communities, and it was an opportunity to reflect, respect and celebrate,” she said.
