MECHANIC Corey Scriven, a member of Masons’ Moree Lodge Courallie, has been named Young Citizen of the Year at the Moree Plains Australia Day awards ceremony, held at Jellicoe Park last week.

Corey, who works at Hill Fitzsimmons Moree and is a much-welcomed face in his role as an NRMA roadside service provider, received the award from Moree Plains Shire deputy mayor, Wayne Tighe.

“I’m very thankful for this award, and it’s nice that the town recognises some of the things I do,” Corey said.

“I like to help anyone I can, especially with roadside, by giving them a hand and getting them going again.

“Everyone is happy if everyone’s cars are going,” he laughed.

About three years ago, Corey and his partner, Bella, lost all their possessions in a devastating fire at a rental property. They were just about to move into their own home when the tragedy struck.

“Quite a few people, especially through the lodge and from work, supported us through that and now I like to give a little bit back, and help where I can,” Corey said.

“I’m with the Masons at the moment, and plan to join the car club.”

Moree Plains Shire general manager, Natalia Cowley, said Corey makes a positive impact everywhere he goes.

“Alongside his full-time role as a mechanic, Corey also works with the NRMA, demonstrating an exceptional work ethic and commitment to helping others,” Ms Cowley said.

“Balancing two demanding roles is no easy task, yet Corey approaches both with dedication, professionalism and pride in his work.

“What truly sets Corey apart is the way he connects with people. Everyone who meets him is greeted with positivity, approachability and a genuine sense of humour.

“A conversation with Corey is always accompanied by a laugh and a good chat, and that ability to lift spirits and build rapport makes a lasting impression on colleagues, customers and community members alike,” she said.

Corey completed his trade in 2023 and has continued to give his all, not only in his professional life but also through his ongoing commitment to the community.

“Wherever he can lend a hand, Corey steps up. He’s always willing to contribute his time and skills for the benefit of others,” Ms Cowley said.
