Vicki Marsh isn’t one for being the centre of attention. But next Friday, she’ll be sitting outside Priceline Pharmacy Moree, having most of her hair cut off while people watch.
For the pharmacy assistant, who has lived in Moree for about 20 years, it’s a big step. But there’s someone much more important on her mind.
Her 33-year-old niece, Laura, is undergoing treatment for breast cancer and has three young children.
Vicki has organised a raffle and afternoon tea to help raise money for Laura and her family, with the fundraiser building towards a buzz cut on Friday, 30 October.
And while some people might enjoy the attention, Vicki would rather keep things low-key.
“I know I haven’t advertised very well, but I’m just not one to do that,” she said.
She described the haircut itself as a “massive big massive deal”.
Vicki plans to have her hair clipped to a number two, rather than shaved completely, with Hair by Ardee doing the honours.
The money raised will help Laura and her family with medical costs, a wig, groceries, rent and other living expenses while she undergoes treatment.
With Laura too unwell to travel to Moree, one of Vicki’s daughters plans to film the haircut so she can watch from home.
The fundraiser has the support of Priceline Pharmacy Moree, where Vicki has worked for around four years.
Vicki said pharmacy owner Nadin Selman had told her she would be there on the day.
Five raffle prizes are up for grabs, including gift vouchers, beauty products and other items.
Tickets are available at the pharmacy counter, and Vicki hopes people will continue to support the fundraiser in the lead-up to Friday.
There won’t be any special costumes or elaborate pink-themed celebrations.
“I don’t like spectacles at all,” Vicki said when asked about dressing up for the occasion.
Instead, she’s keeping things simple: a haircut, an afternoon tea and a chance for people to help a family doing it tough.
HOW TO SUPPORT VICKI’S FUNDRAISER
Vicki’s buzz cut will take place outside Priceline Pharmacy Moree on Friday, 30 October, at approximately 2.30pm.
Afternoon tea will be available beforehand for a gold coin donation, with the raffle expected to be drawn between 2pm and 2.15pm.
Raffle tickets cost $2 each or three for $5 and are available at Priceline Pharmacy Moree during opening hours.
People can also support Laura and her family through their GoFundMe fundraiser.
