New-look Moree Cup weekend will showcase racing, golfing and fundraising

Jul 17, 2025

MOREE Race Club is saddling up for a new-look Moree Cup Carnival, with a three-day format taking in thoroughbred racing, a round of golf, cup calcutta and a charity ball to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

The charity ball, at Moree racecourse on Friday, August 29, will feature former NRL star Daniel Mortimer from Mortimer Wines at Orange as guest speaker, a four-course meal catered by Relish and live entertainment by Split Image.

Moree Race Club secretary Michelle Gobbert said there will be an in-house auction and raffles as well as a courtesy bus to and from the event.

“The club has put together a new, three-day format that includes a golf tournament and calcutta the day before the races,” Gobbert said.

“The club also has a new sub-committee to help organise and make the weekend bigger and better for a great cause.”

Golfers can play in a four-person, nine-hole ambrose – with shotgun start – from 2.15pm, followed by the Moree Cup calcutta in the clubhouse from 6pm.

Nominations need to be lodged by Sunday, August 24 at a cost of $20 per player.

The family race-day on Sunday, August 31, will feature Fashions on the Field sponsored by Beauty Matters Moree, plenty of kids’ activities, grazing boxes available for pre-order as well as a trackside marquee for all race-goers.

The eight-race card, with a whopping $300,000 prize money, features the $55,000 Moree Cup (1400m), $50,000 Moree Super Maiden (1400m) and $35,000 Moree Town Plate (950m).

Supporting races, each worth $35,000, include a 1200m country boosted class 1 handicap and 950m country boosted maiden handicap, with a 1300m BM-58 handicap, 950m class 3 handicap and 1600m class 1 and maiden plate each worth $30,000.

Apprentice Mollie Fitzgerald brings 2024 Moree Cup winner Macleay, a 40-1 bolter, back to scale.

Moree Race Club president Rob Mather expects strong nominations.

“The club this year has a very strong cup meeting program, with great prize money, and I expect full fields with quality runners, especially in the feature races,” Mather said.

Moree Race Club will also stage the Moree Ag Supplies and Steel TAB race-day next Tuesday, July 22, with seven races and $195,000 prize money.

The meeting has 108 nominations, with acceptances due by 9am tomorrow, Friday, July 18.

Meetings for Moree later this year include the Tradies’ Day TAB meeting on Friday, October 31 and the club’s signature Christmas twilight meeting on Saturday, December 20.
