Grand-Finals in Moree

Boars and Bulls to host grand-finals after big wins Saturday

Aug 24, 2025

MOREE Boars and Moree Bulls will host home-ground grand-finals in two weeks’ time after each club scored hard-fought major semi-final wins across two grades on Saturday.

At Boughton Oval, Moree Boars delivered edge-of-the-seat stuff to win first-grade and second-grade major semi-finals in the Group 4 rugby league competition.

A couple of hours away at Gunnedah Rugby Club, Moree Bulls were doing pretty much the same thing in the Central North rugby union competition.

Moree Boars held off a determined Gunnedah Bulldogs to win the first-grade major semi-final, 30-26.

Earlier, Boars second-grade played almost perfect football to beat Werris Creek Magpies, 32-24.

At Gunnedah, Moree Bulls delivered a 28-24 win against Gunnedah Red Devils in first-grade after landing a knock-out 40-39 win in second-grade against Quirindi Lions.

Both codes will now host grand-finals in Moree next month on the Fathers’ Day weekend.

The Boars chase back-to-back grand-final wins after last year beating Boggabri Kangaroos, 40-18.

Sam Sadler (obscured) scores the game-clincher in the 71st minute against Gunnedah Bulldogs at Boughton Oval on Saturday. Moree Boars will now host the grand-final for the second year in a rown in two weeks’ time.

The Bulls seek redemption after Narrabri Blue Boars delivered a 31-27 come-from-behind win at home ground Dangar Park 12 months ago.

Bulls club president David Watts said both Bulls’ games were “crackers”.

“It was big day for Moree, with both codes winning, and the Bulls now have three men’s teams in grand-finals at home – the first time we’ve had a grand-final at home in 10 years,” Watts said.

“The first-grade and second-grade matches at Gunnedah were two cracking games of football.

“We took an early lead in first-grade, but Gunnedah got back into the game and it seesawed – it was a ripper game of rugby.

“Our third-grade are already in the grand-final, so now we’ll have three grades in home-ground grand-finals, and to have two codes in grand-finals the same weekend is very exciting for Moree,” Watts said.

Moree Boars club president Todd Mitchell was a relieved man after first-grade held on to win narrowly.

“It was a close finish – too close for me,” Mitchell smiled.

“But it was a good effort and I’m very impressed with the boys – they went well.

“We hadn’t played in a few weeks, and probably faded away a little bit in the second half, but we go the job done.

“Gunnedah really stuck it out – it was a tight game right to the bell.

“We’ve now got a home grand-final for the second year in a row. It’s what we’ve wanted all year, and now we’ll focus on the next couple of weeks heading into the game,” he said.
