ASPIRING Moree musicians who have never played bagpipes, snare drums or tenor drums but are curious about learning need look no further.

Members of Moree Caledonian Pipes and Drums are now conducting lessons – free of charge – as they build up band number heading into 2026.

Pipe major Tim Tesoriero said the only cost involved is an annual club membership fee of $100 to help cover running costs and insurance, with free weekly lessons available.

All learner instruments are supplied until learners are certain they want to continue.

“Once they become full members, uniforms are supplied as well,” Tim said.

Learner practice is held at the band hall in Jellicoe Park on Warialda Street every Tuesday at 5.30pm.

“Learning an instrument in a pipe band is more than just becoming a musician,” Tim said.

“It’s about being a part of a team – something you can continue doing for the rest of your life.

“We have members ranging in ages six to 82. The piping community, though relatively small, stretches all over Australia, and is very welcoming,” Tim said.

Free lessons are available for anyone wanting to learn an instrument and be a part of the band.

“Instruments include bagpipes, snare drums and tenor drums. We take learners for the tenor and snare from ages six and up,” Tim said.

Bagpipes lessons are available to learners aged seven to eight an upwards, depending on hand size and maturity.

“Adults are welcome to learn as well,” Tim said.

“Currently, we have nine children learners at varying stages.”

Moree Caledonian Pipes and Drums band has taught a large number of students over the last 15 years, with more than 30 members reaching competition level.

“Many of our younger members have been awarded scholarships to private boarding schools in New South Wales and Queensland, and two of our students, Angus Hattenfels and Jack McCudden, went on to become pipe majors with Scots Bathurst pipe band,” Tim said.
