Community recycling turns refunds into life-changing research for kids

Jan 19, 2026

FOR families waiting on treatments, every dollar matters.

So, $100,000 worth of research into genetic diseases is an amazing way to start a new year.

Thanks to the generosity of New South Wales, and every person who has chosen to donate their containers via Return and Earn, Jeans for Genes has been gifted $100,000 to continue vital research into children’s health.

Beyond the dollars, the impact is measured in hope for families navigating uncertain futures as the scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute continue their research to develop new diagnostics and treatment options.

Seven-year-old Alessia, who was born with a serious genetic condition, is the face of the Jeans for Genes and Return and Earn partnership. Until a few years ago, children with her condition mostly did not survive beyond their second birthday, but today Alessia is alive and well thanks to research.

Alessia’s father Adam urged everyone to donate their drink containers so more children could receive treatments and cures.

“Without research we wouldn’t have Alessia, but there are more than 6,000 genetic diseases and most of them don’t have any effective treatment options yet, so we all need to do what we can to support research,” Alan said.

“The spare change you collect through Return and Earn can add up when whole communities get onboard and make a huge difference in the lives of children like our daughter.”

Every 10-cents refund adds up. This incredible milestone, the equivalent of 1 million donated containers, is a powerful example of how sustainability and medical progress can go hand in hand, funding research that gives children with cancer and genetic conditions a brighter future while simultaneously helping the environment.

Community fundraising manager, Maddie Walsh said the milestone reflects thousands of everyday acts of kindness – the simple choice to return a bottle or can and select Jeans for Genes as the recipient. Together, those small decisions have created something big.

“This milestone belongs to the community,” she said.

“It shows how powerful we are when we band together – we don’t have to give big to have a big impact. It reminds us that even the smallest contribution is enough to make a real difference.

“We’re deeply grateful to everyone who made this possible.”

Jeans for Genes is the major donation partner with Return and Earn until April 20, 2026.
