THERE could soon be a few new names on Moree’s comedy circuit – if locals are brave enough to grab the microphone.

Social Co House is calling on aspiring comedians, storytellers and self-proclaimed funny people to put their hand up for a stand-up comedy night planned for Saturday, June 27.

The event is being developed as an open mic-style comedy night, designed to give first-timers and amateur performers the chance to test their material in front of a live audience.

Event organiser Michael Phipps, better known as Phippsy, said the concept is about creating a fun, low-pressure environment for locals to have a crack at stand-up comedy.

“There are plenty of people in Moree who reckon they’re funny after a few beers, so we’re giving them the chance to prove it,” Phippsy laughed.

“This isn’t about polished professionals coming to town – it’s about local people getting up, telling a few stories, having a laugh and having a go at something new.”

Local identities Jayne McDouall and Andrew O’Neill have already put their hands up to perform, with both keen to test their comedic talents on the night.

Phippsy said early interest from locals willing to step outside their comfort zone was encouraging.

“The hardest part is always getting the first few people to commit,” he said.

“Once others see familiar faces having a go, it gives everyone else permission to jump in too.”

Social Co House is also exploring the possibility of running a comedy workshop in the lead-up to the event, with the aim of helping first-time performers build confidence and learn the basics of joke writing, storytelling and stagecraft.

The workshop would provide an opportunity for participants to develop material during the day before taking to the stage that night.

“The dream scenario is people spend the day learning the ropes, then graduate straight into the stand-up night that evening,” Phippsy said.
