SPENDING Easter at hometown Mungindi with family and friends was a little bit different this year for Tayla Frahm – she turned up at the bordertown with flowing locks, but went home to Queensland with a new, quite shiny look.

Tayla now lives at the Gold Coast with partner Paris and returned to Mungindi earlier this month to take part in the World’s Greatest Shave, an important, national fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Tayla, 24, figured having family and friends gather in the backyard of her grandmother’s home in Mungindi would be the perfect setting for such a hair-raising experience.

After plenty of clipping, shaving and quite a few laughs, Tayla raised $2870 for the Leukaemia Foundation – considerably more than her $1500 target.

“It was funny watching everyone’s reaction throughout the process; they all looked very concerned until the end when it was all finished,” Tayla laughed.

“At the time of the shave I had raised $2500 and continued to receive donations afterwards.

“Some ladies at the Jolly Swagman gave me cash later in the afternoon and at the moment, money raised stands at $2870,” she said.

Once the clippers were switched on, it seemed everyone wanted a turn lopping Tayla’s locks – with the fundraiser perfectly captured by photographer, Taylor Beale.

“It took a while to put all of my hair in plaits,” Tayla said.

“I cut the first plait off, then my granny, Anne Smith, cut off the second one. After that, everyone came up one at a time to cut off a plait or two.

“My girlfriend, Paris, then shaved it all off, and I had a go as well.

“We took a bunch a photos and I got a lot of head rubs afterwards,” she laughed.

“I love my new hair style. It makes me feel very free and feminine – it grows a lot faster than I expected, though.

“I had my first haircut two weeks after the shave and it had grown so much already. I’ve decided to keep the buzz cut look for a little while,” she said.

Tayla’s locks will be used to make hairpieces for leukaemia sufferers.

“I got an email saying my hair donation has been received and their team is sorting and grading it,” she said.

“I’m so happy with how everything turned out. If anyone is considering doing the shave, I highly recommend it – it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done,” Tayla smiled.
