LORILIE Haines said some changes at training made the difference – and the Moree Boars ladies heeded their coach’s advice with an 18-4 win against Kootingal Moonbi Roosters in the Group 4 ladies tackle competition at Boughton Oval on Sunday.
Despite the team being unbeaten this season, Haines said changes were crucial – and those changes were taken on board, which led to a decisive win against the Adelaide Monica-coached Roosters.
Moree tries to wingers Colleen Fernando and Aileen Seeto, interchange Holly O’Dempsey and lock Ruby Smith, as well as a goal to Shay Smith one minute from full-time, secured the runaway victory.
Kootingal’s only points came from a try from centre Mikayla Skinner in the 29th minute.
Haines said group talks at training made a big difference.
“We had some big changes through the week, with some goals we wanted to achieve – and I think we’ve achieved them,” Haines said.
“Preparation for game-day was a bit better and I think we took to the field a lot more positive.
“We’ve still got some work to do around the urgency of football and the urgency of wanting to play, and the biggest thing we need to do is keep motivating the players,” she said.
Haines said the work from the forward pack on Sunday was again key to the win – the team’s third on trot this season.
“It was the forwards again, doing their work,” Haines said.
“Again, they made it easier for the backs to have a run and without that middle going forward, makes it hard.
“They’ve done their work the last three weeks and this is why we’re getting the results.”
Haines said stand-out players were Shirl Swan, Aileen Seeto and Ruby Smith.
“Ruby plays really well, and gives it everything,” Haines said.
In other games on Sunday, Moree Boars first-grade decimated the Roosters 60-nil and second-grade accounted for the Roosters 46-24.
The Boars are again at home next Sunday, when they take on Dungowan Cowboys at Boughton Oval.
