EMERGING leaders across the Murray-Darling Basin are being called to nominate for the first round of a new leadership development program focused on securing a sustainable future for the Murray–Darling Basin.
With applications for the inaugural intake of the Murray–Darling Basin Leadership Program closing on Sunday June 7, 2026, Murray–Darling Basin Authority chief executive Andrew McConville encouraged people across rural and regional Australia to seize the opportunity to get involved.
“The pressures felt in the Basin, whether environmental, economic or social, can’t be alleviated without capable people on the ground. That’s why backing local talent matters so much,” Mr McConville said.
“For an up-and-coming leader, this is a real chance to sharpen your abilities, widen your contacts and gain the confidence to drive change at home.
“We’re looking for people from all parts of the Basin, including community, industry, local government and grassroots leaders, who want to work beyond their own patch and help build a Basin‑wide culture of collaboration and shared learning.
“That includes young leaders as well as those with more life experience who are looking to take a greater role in their community.
“If you’re keen to build your leadership capability, I’d urge you to put an application in by this Sunday, June 7.”
Delivered by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, the program comprises of two in-person sessions and online learning and coaching between those sessions over a 10-month period.
The program supports participants to develop as leaders, forge new connections and learn to work with confidence to solve problems within their local communities together.
Three separate cohorts will progress through the program, the first commencing in July 2026, with the full roll-out wrapping up in December, 2027.
Applications for the first cohort close on Sunday, June 7.
