A 14-year-old boy has been charged over the alleged possession of a knife and axe in Moree overnight after police responded to a call regarding an attempted theft from a motor vehicle.

The boy was allegedly also in the possession of a balaclava and pair of gloves.

Officers attached to New England Police District were called to the corner of Adelaide Street and Boston Street, Moree, at about 9.15pm yesterday, after reports a boy had attempted to steal from a motor vehicle.

Police attended and were told a group of young males had attempted to break into a vehicle in the vicinity of Chester Street and Adelaide Street, Moree.

Following inquiries – and with the assistance of a PolAir remotely piloted drone – police located three boys walking nearby.

During a search of a 14-year-old boy, police allegedly located and seized a knife, throwing axe, balaclava and a set of gloves, with another balaclava and set of gloves also being located nearby.

Officers arrested the boy and took him to Moree Police Station, where he was charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, custody of knife in public place and have custody of an offensive implement in a public place.

He was granted strict conditional bail and will appear before a children’s court on Thursday, June 18.

The two other boys – aged 13 and 16 – were issued move-on directions.
