INVERELL gelding Connewarre has been given hefty weights in both feature races at round three of bush racing’s Golden Triangle at Talmoi on Saturday.
The Wayne Oakenfull-trained five-year-old, winner of the Moree Bracelet last month, has been handed 76.5kg for the 1000m Helen Boland Memorial Talmoi Bracelet and 75.5kg for the 1400m Talmoi Cup.
Oakenfull also has Shut Eye nominated for both races, with the five-year-old handicapped 69.5kg in the bracelet and one kilo less in the cup.
“We’ll wait until the meeting gets a little closer before deciding which way we go with both horses,” Oakenfull said.
The trainer will also start Pub Feed (66kg) in the 1200m class 1 handicap.
Scone jockey Ashley Boyd, who rode winning doubles at Moree and Mallawa, has been booked for all Oakenfull runners on Saturday.
The historic six-race meeting, first held in 1911, drew 58 nominations.
The Talmoi Cup has 10 entries, including recent Boolooroo Cup winner Thiem (68.5kg) from Jimmy Downes’ Beaudesert stables and Mallawa Cup winner Akauwheo, trained at Quirindi by Geoff O’Brien.
Also in the mix is Connie Greig’s recent Quambone Cup winner I’m Scarlett (71.5kg) and stablemate Hemsted, runner-up in this year’s Mallawa Cup and winner of the $50,000 Picnic Championship Final at Dubbo four years ago.
The Talmoi Bracelet has drawn 12 nominations, with Justela, now trained at Oakey by Michael Laine after transferring from Kembla Grange trainer Kerry Parker, given a hefty 79kg.

Jockey Ashley Boyd, fresh from winning doubles at Moree and Mallawa, will ride Connewarre, Shut Eye and Pub Feed at Talmoi picnic races on Saturday for Inverell trainer Wayne Oakenfull.
Connie Greig’s Mallawa Bracelet winner Redline Fever has been given 68kg, with stablemate Trigoso – a big winner at Mallawa in class 2 grade 10 days ago – allotted 67.5kg.
Greig has nine runners in the mix for the meeting.
The Dubbo trainer has also nominated Te Pani (73kg), Beaunified (69.5kg), Trigoso (68.5kg) and You Count (62.5kg) in the 800m class 3 handicap; Maybe Moureen (69.5kg) in the 1200m class 1 handicap; and Culgoa Kate (65kg) in the 1000m maiden plate.
Greig, with eight of the top 12 qualified runners so far for the big Picnic Championship Final at Dubbo on September 27, is in for a busy few days.
She also has three runners nominated for Coonabarabran on Saturday and five in at Narromine on Monday.
