Moree Giants the big winners despite loss

Aug 24, 2024

A SPOT in the ILT grand-final was not to be for the Moree Giants, but an incredible 2024 season has meant the world to the Moree Junior Rugby League Club trailblazers and their coach, Warren Sampson.

The ILT Moree Giants were beaten 22-14 by Guyra Spuds in the major semi-final last Saturday, but the season just finished has been a defining moment for the club.

“We had a great season and stayed in the top three all year – even sat at the top of the ladder at one part,” Sampson said.

“Unfortunately we didn’t get the win, but we didn’t hand it to them, either.

“The girls have worked so hard all season, and showed up for each other each week. They have all grown as individuals, as a team, and as players.

“I’m hoping I’ve taught these girls not only how to play, but how to be humble, respectful, and show great sportsmanship.”

Sampson thanked Moree Boars club president Todd Mitchell, who donated boars caps to all ILT players and the Moree Boomerangs ladies tag players who met and cheered the bus as it left Moree.

“Thank-you everyone, all of us really appreciate it,” Sampson said.

Moree Junior Rugby League Club president Steve Cory said the ILT girls are great ambassadors for the game, and Moree.

“Unfortunately, our girls were beaten in a close match, but they can hold their heads high,” Cory said. “To be within one win of making a grand-final is a massive achievement and, as a club, we are proud of these young girls no matter the result.

“That game wrapped up 2024, but for some of these young girls the season isn’t quite over – some are joining the girls’ tackle competition that goes until September 14.

“Our league tag girls did an enormous job throughout the season, and full credit to Warren Sampson and Gina Munro for their ongoing contribution to the ILT side,” Cory said.
