Every day of the week is an opportunity to show love and appreciation for furry friends, but August 26 was set aside 20 years ago to really celebrate canine love around Australia – and the world.

International Dog Day was founded in 2004 in the US by animal welfare advocate and pet lifestyle expert, Colleen Paige.

The special day celebrates all breeds – mixed and pure – and serves as a reminder the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year.

National Dog Day honours family dogs and dogs that work selflessly to save lives, keep everyone safe and bring comfort.

Ms Paige said dogs put their lives on the line every day. They protect families and homes, are law enforcement partners, and companions for the blind and disabled.

Specialist dogs help with the detection of bombs and drugs, and help locate and rescue victims of accidents and tragedy.

Ms Paige also founded National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day and National Cat Day to encourage adoption and raise awareness of the important roles animals play in people’s lives.

Importantly, International Dog Day also remembers the many pooches that didn’t make it.

“Millions of dogs are killed each year because they’re simply unwanted,” Ms Paige said.

“All a dog wants to do is love you and be loved by you. Dogs are amazing, courageous, sensitive and sentient beings that deserve compassion and respect.”
