Fire at Terry Hie Hie tip quickly controlled

Dec 17, 2024

A green waste fire at Terry Hie Hie waste management facility was quickly brought under control by rural fire services and Moree Plains Shire Council staff overnight.

The waste facility, close to the Terry Hie Hie State Forest and Yana-y Warruwi walking track and Aboriginal heritage sites, was attended to by fire-fighters and council staff.

Water trucks and an excavator were used to control the blaze and no injuries were reported.

MPSC general manager, Kelvin Tytherleigh, said the blaze, which quickly spread across about an hectare, was brought under control and extinguished just after 1am.

“There are still people on-site, wetting it down and council water trucks are there as well,” Mr Tytherleigh said.

“It looks like the fire started in the pit, and an assessment will be done at first light.

“The main thing is, the national park is safe, nobody got hurt, and the fire didn’t get away,” he said.

“There are still a few embers burning, and there’s concern the wind might pick up, but staff are there monitoring everything.

“It was a very good effort from volunteers and council staff. Terry Hie Hie brigade was joined by the Gurley brigade and they got everything under control very quickly,” Mr Tytherleigh said.

A green waste fire at Terry Hie Hie waste management facility was quickly brought under control overnight and is being monitored by MPSC staff.

The Terry Hie Hie State Forest, about 50km east of Moree, covers an area of around 5900 hectares and adjoins Pallamallawa, Bingara and Warialda.

The blaze follows lightning strike fires at nearby Boolah Farms and Weebollabolla.

A fire on Talga Lane three days ago quickly spread through Koorindah and to neighbouring properties.

No-one was injured and no damage to infrastructure was recorded.

At Weebollabolla, nearly 300 hectares of stubble cover was lost in a blaze that was brought under control by Moree, Pallamallawa, Gurley and Ashley Rural Fire Brigades, with the assistance of staff from nearby Chinook and Aircair Aviation.
