WITH temperatures expected to soar across north-western New South Wales as the countdown to Christmas begins, total fire bans across most of New South Wales have been implemented today, Monday, December 23.
Total fire bans are in place across the Moree Plains Shire, Narrabri Shire, Walgett Shire and Warrumbungle Shire.
The temperature in Moree is expected to nudge 38 degrees, with winds of up to 35kph forecast.
On the northern slopes, fires are not permitted in Gunnedah, Gwydir, Inverell, Liverpool Plains and Tamworth Shires.
The total fire ban also includes Cessnock, Dungog, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Muswellbrook, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Singleton and Upper Hunter local government areas.
A total fire ban means no fires out in the open. A total fire ban helps limit the potential of fires developing. During a total fire ban it is not permitted to light, maintain or use a fire in the open, or to carry out any activity in the open that causes, or is likely to cause, a fire.
General purpose hot works, such as welding, grinding, gas-cutting or any activity that produces a spark or flame, are not to be done in the open.
Lighting a fire on a day of total fire ban can attract an on-the-spot fine of $2200. If the matter goes to court, defendants could face a fine of up to $5500 and/or 12 months gaol.
Penalties for a fire that escapes and damages or destroys life, property or the environment can attract much greater fines and gaol terms with maximums at $132,000 and/or 14 years gaol. Civil law suits can also be brought against the person responsible for a fire by those seeking compensation for losses sustained.
NSW Rural Fire Services commissioner, Rob Rogers, said now was the time to be vigilant.
“With the summer ahead, it is crucial for all of us to remain vigilant. Prepare your homes, update your bush fire survival plan and stay informed. Be live bush fire ready,” Mr Rogers said.
