MOREE welcomed five new citizens to town – and the country – at Jellicoe Park on Sunday, as part of local Australia Day celebrations.

Australia Day in Moree commenced with citizenship ceremonies for the shire’s newest citizens from Canada, New Zealand and India.

Moree Plains Shire Council mayor, Susannah Pearse, proudly wore the mayoral robes and chains of office for the first as she welcomed the new citizens to Australia.

“Australia Day is about the ever-evolving story of our nation – our history, our identity and most of all, our people,” Cr Pearse said.

“It is a day that reminds us of the common bond we share as Australians, connected by a desire for unity, and the promise of safety, stability and prosperity.

“It is a huge honour to stand here today as mayor and have the great privilege to preside over the citizenship ceremony welcoming five new Australians to our country.

“To our new citizens today, thank-you for choosing to call the Moree Plains home. We are honoured to have you,” she smiled.

“Today, at its heart, is intended as a day of celebration; a day to celebrate our new Australians.”

Cr Pearse said migrants have been integral in shaping Australian communities, bringing new industries, new skills and vibrancy to towns and villages.

Figures from 2001 show 12.2 per cent of residents in the Moree Plains were not born in Australia.

Twenty years later, the figure has more than doubled.

“I am excited for what this means for our community, as we welcome new faces, new ideas and new passions,” Cr Pearse said.

The mayor showcased and congratulated the inspiring achievements of the people of the Moree Plains.

“Today, at its heart, is a day to celebrate those in our community who go above and beyond, who look out for those less fortunate, who strive to bring our community together, to do their best, and to make our region the great place it can be,” she said.

Darryl Brady, Moree Volunteer of the Year four years ago, was named 2025 Moree Citizen of the Year.

The Australia Day ceremony also recognised Moree Lion Beth Hearn, who was named Mayoral Award recipient, Volunteer of the Year Peter Winkley, Sportsperson of the Year, Eric Dumas, and Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Kate McDonald.

The inaugural Run the Plains Carnival was named Community Event of the Year and Lifehouse Pantry Moree was named Volunteer Group of the Year.

Awards emcee, Moree council director of infrastructure, John Dyer, thanked everyone who attended the Australia Day breakfast, kindly catered for by Moree Lions Club.

“I want to thank the Lions Club volunteers for their continued support in and around our shire, as well as a special thank-you to Moree Caledonian Pipes and Drums Band and Rachel Cubis for providing entertainment,” Mr Dyer said.
