NSW Police are appealing for information after an Anzac memorial in a Walgett park was damaged earlier this week.
On Thursday, officers attached to Central North Police District received a report that an Anzac memorial in Walgett Memorial Park on Fox Street, Walgett, had been damaged.
Police arrived and found a statue of an Anzac soldier – imported from France in 1922 – had its arm damaged and marble firearm stolen.
Following initial inquiries, police believe the statue had been damaged sometime after Monday, February 10.
As investigation continue, police are urging anyone with dashcam footage, CCTV or information about the incident to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Unveiled in 1922, the imposing lone soldier on the Walgett Memorial Monument stood for a century on a roundabout at the intersection of the Castlereagh Highway and Wee Waa Street before being relocated to its present spot.
The memorial was originally designed by D W Carter & Co of Sydney and is affectionately known as the Man on the Monument.
It was erected to commemorate the end of The Great War and records the names of all people who voluntarily left the district to take part in the war.
The memorial was officially dedicated on June 26, 1922, and unveiled by Minister for Lands, Walter Wearne.
After being damaged at the roundabout by a turning B-triple in 2021, the statue was restored and placed in the Walgett RSL Memorial Park.
A replica statue also stands at the original location.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
