Stay Informed: Gwydir River updates

Mar 8, 2025

The NSW SES advises people in the following areas STAY INFORMED about predicted possible minor to  major flooding on the Gwydir River: Gravesend and surrounds including the Horton River communities; Pallamallawa and surrounds; and Yarraman Bridge north of Moree.

Residents should stay informed by monitoring warnings issued by NSW SES on their website and Facebook page, and checking the latest weather information from the Bureau of Meteorology online.

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises rainfall associated with Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred is likely to cause rapid and dangerous river rises and extensive flooding in north-western New South Wales during the weekend and into early next week.

Rainfall may extend inland during Sunday into early next week and may result in minor to major flooding in the north-west and central-west Catchments from Sunday.

There is a chance the flood watch area may expand further over the coming days as certainty develops about the movement of the system into the new week.

The location of the heaviest rainfall and most severe flooding will depend on the track of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

The recent slower movement of Ex-TC Alfred is likely to delay the onset of the heaviest rainfall, with heavy and locally intense rainfall forecast to increase Friday night and into the weekend over Northern NSW.

The heaviest rainfall will be south of the Ex-Tropical Cyclone track.

Based on predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology, the following areas may be impacted by dangerous floodwaters: Low-lying areas along the Gwydir River may be impacted by floodwater between Gravesend and Yarraman bridge.

Farmers along this stretch of river are advised to lift irrigation equipment and move livestock ahead of predicted flooding in the coming days
