SES issues Stay Informed advice for Gwydir River; west Narrabri flooding

THE NSW SES has issued stay informed advice for residents along the Gwydir, Namoi, Macintyre and Peel rivers after heavy rain in the past 48 hours across north-western New South Wales.

Some areas of the Gwydir River catchment area at Upper Horton have received nearly 135mm of rain in the past week, with nearly 130mm at Barraba for the same period.

Narrabri has had up to 190mm of rain over the past seven days, with flooding in parts of west Narrabri.

Properties on Burt Street, Mooloobar Street, Railway Street (north and south), Zimmerman Street, Baranbar Street and Goobar Street have been impacted.

Westward, the Collarenebri district has had more than 170mm of rain since Monday, including 100mm overnight Friday.

Walgett has been drenched with nearly 200mm in the last seven days to 9am, Saturday, and Lightning Ridge has had more than 340mm fore the same period.

Burren Junction has received 180mm and nearly 140mm has fallen at Merrywinebone for the same period.

Falls of between 160mm and 200mm have been recorded in the Wee Waa district, with all roads to the town closed as at about 3pm, Saturday.

Narrabri SES unit is requesting community volunteers to assist filling sandbags at Narrabri SES headquarters at 4 Reid Street.

An SES assistance centre has also been set up at the Crossing Theatre.

As at lunchtime Saturday, the Newell Highway was closed to light traffic between Narrabri and Coonabarabran with motorists asked to consider Kamilaroi Highway and Oxley Highway via Gunnedah as alternative routes.

NSW SES advises people in low-lying areas along the Gwydir, Macintyre, Namoi and Peel Rivers to stay informed about predicted minor flooding.
