AN Australian audience favourite, Acacia Quartet, returns to Gunnedah this weekend for a special afternoon of music at the Romanesque chapel at the Convent of Mercy.
The Chapel celebrated is centenary earlier this month and on Sunday, May 25, the acclaimed Acacia Quartet will enchant audiences with an afternoon of sublime chamber music, showcasing three masterful string quartets that span centuries and styles.
Gunnedah Conservatorium director Rebecca Ryan said Acacia Quartet’s return to Gunnedah follows a well-received concert last year.
“It’s very exciting for us to be able to bring Acacia back to Gunnedah to celebrate 15 years of the ensemble,” Ms Ryan said.
“Presenting the concert in the Chapel brings another dimension and the audience is always complementary of the acoustics and environment – what a beautiful way to spend Sunday afternoon.”
The program includes Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76 No. 4, Sunrise, a radiant and uplifting work, its opening theme unfolding like the first light of dawn.
The quartet will also present Nick Wales’ Harbour Light, a contemporary piece blending classical and electronic elements to create an evocative and atmospheric soundscape.

The concert culminates with Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, a shimmering impressionistic masterpiece from 1903, rich in lush harmonies and intricate textures – an enduring testament to Ravel’s genius in chamber music.

Forming in 2010, Acacia Quartet are one of Australia’s most respected string ensembles.

Locally, Acacia’s engagements include the Sydney Opera House, City Recital Hall Sydney, Melbourne Recital Hall, as well as extensive touring through regional New South Wales and Victoria. Internationally, Acacia had their international debut in Vancouver, Canada at the Roundhouse in June, 2016 and have since followed up with performances in Europe.
