World champion lawn bowler Aron Sherriff to coach and play in Moree this week

May 22, 2025

AUSTRALIAN champion lawn-bowler Aron Sherriff – last year ranked No.1 in the world – will host a bowls coaching clinic at Moree Services Club on Friday before playing with the Broadbeach Bulls in a trial game against Moree Magpies on Saturday.

The breakthrough visit is the brainchild of Moree brothers Phil and Peter Hobday, both champion lawn bowlers.

Phil Hobday was earlier this year appointed Moree Services Club bowls co-ordinator. He said getting  a bowler the calibre of Aron Sherriff to Moree to coach and play was a coup for the club.

“This is something really good for Moree,” Hobday said.

“It’s not often we have a player like Aron Sherriff here, let alone here to host a coaching clinic as well as play.

“Pete plays at Broadbeach a lot and knows Aron well. He worked on it his end, and I worked on it my end, and we got a trial game organised,” he said.

Sherriff, ranked No.1 in the world in 2023 and 2024 and a six-times Australian champion, late last year announced his international retirement from an incredible, 17-year career.

He said he is looking forward to the Moree visit.

“Peter and I have been talking for quite a while about me getting to Moree, and this weekend fitted in beautifully with everything,” Sherriff said.

“I’m really looking forward to the trip, and trying out the Moree greens – I’ve heard a lot about them.”

Sherriff will also host a clinic on Friday afternoon, ahead of Moree Magpies crack at the NSW State Open Pennant Finals in Wagga Wagga next month.

“Basically, the clinic will be about showing the Moree boys different  techniques and drills, before their state pennants,” Sherriff said.

Sherriff, 39, made more than 400 appearances on the international stage, when wearing the green and gold with the Australian Jackaroos.

He represented Australia at four World Bowls Championships, winning gold three times, as well as collecting three silver and two bronze.

Sherriff also won six medals at the Asia Pacific Bowls Championships at the Gold Coast in 2019, including double gold in the triples and fours.

Sherriff still plays domestically, and will take to Moree Services Club’s synthetic greens on Saturday afternoon.

“Aron will do a coaching clinic for club members and non-members on Friday afternoon at 4pm, and that will probably go for about two hours,” Phil Hobday said.

“People are quite welcome to come down and watch, without taking part.

“On Saturday, Moree Magpies will play a trial game with the Broadbeach boys, who Aron plays with, and the rest of the team are all Queensland state players.

“We’ll have three teams of four. It will be a pennants match, and we encourage as many people as possible to come along and watch.

“As I said, it’s not often we get a player the calibre of Aron Sherriff in Moree to coach as well as play,” Hobday said.
