ARMIDALE trainer Jane Clement and Scone jockey Eloise Drews were at it again at Moree picnic races on Saturday when they teamed up to win the 1400m B&W Rural Boolooroo Cup with tough gelding Awesome Tycoon.
Clement and Drews last year won the Talmoi Bracelet and Talmoi Cup with Sparks and Hardyo, and added another bush feature to the partnership when Awesome Tycoon charged clear to win easily.
And for Drews, having regular rider Shannen Llewellyn strapping Awesome Tycoon was an added bonus.
“Shannen told me exactly what he’s like, and the fact he wants to shy at shadows – but he’s a super horse,” Drews grinned.
Drews, fresh from winning on Unbelievable Helsy at Quambone earlier this month, launched her picnic riding career in February last year and immediately made her mark.
On Saturday, she parked Awesome Tycoon ($5.50) off the speed before pouncing in the straight to beat Gavin Groth’s Norman ($12) by a length, with Wayne Oakenfull’s Stillwell ($3.80) finishing fast for third, a neck away and just ahead of Toulon Factor, a stablemate to the winner.
Awesome Tycoon lumped 69.5kg after Drews’ 2kg claim, but did it with ease on the soft track.
“He was carrying about 19kg of dead weight, which is a lot for a horse to carry,” Drews said.
“I wasn’t that far back in the run. We were wide with no cover and couldn’t really find a spot to slot in.

Jockey Eliose Drews, strapper Shannen Llewellyn and winner Awesome Tycoon share a laugh after winning the B&W Rural Boolooroo Cup at Moree on Saturday.
“I just sat him where he was comfortable, and when the speed started to shift inside of me, I pressed forward.
“He finished off the race really strongly, and he was too good for the rest,” she said.
Awesome Tycoon, formerly with Scone trainer Justin Drake, gave Clement and her husband Rob their 36th winner for the season.
“We’ve had him for four or five starts now,” Jane Clement said.
“He’s been going well, but he’s one of those horses I had to learn a bit about. I think he probably wants a bit further still – up to a mile – but his runs have been super.
“He’s been knocking on the door, and this looked a nice race for him,” she said.

Awesome Tycoon on the outside prevails to win the B&W Rural Boolooroo Cup at Moree on Saturday for trainer Jane Clement and jockey Eloise Drews.
Drews is now looking forward to heading to Mallawa in two weeks’ time for round two of bush racing’s Golden Triangle, where she will again team up with the all-powerful Clement stable.
Last year, they won the feature double at Talmoi, finished second in the Mallawa Cup with Hardyo, and won a class 3 handicap at Moree with Adviser.
“Clemo said he’s already got horses lined up for me, and I’m very lucky I can jump straight on them,” Drews said.
“Jane and Clemo have been really good to me, and I really want to thank them for everything.”
Mallawa Picnic Race Club jumps from the gates on Saturday, June 7, with six races and $50,000 prize money.
The 1400m Mallawa Cup, won last year by Connie Greig’s Inzaghi, is worth $12,000, with the 1000m Mallawa Bracelet worth $10,000. All supporting races are each worth $7000.
Nominations close at 11am on Monday, June 2 with final fields declared at 9am Thursday, June 5.
