Garage Barbershop program headlines busy times ahead at BAMM

May 27, 2025

THERE’S no rest at Bank Art Museum Moree, with a big line-up of exhibitions and programs scheduled for the coming months, including the Garage Barbershop program and Team Trampoline Project.

BAMM director Rosie Dennis said the museum has been busy – and likely to get busier as the year progresses.

“It’s been a fantastic month at BAMM, jam-packed with art and events,” Ms Dennis said.

“Our Team Trampoline project kicked off – and there are still a few spaces in our Monday afternoon workshops (details below).

“We thoroughly enjoyed having barber Charles Lomu and creative project manager Christian Tancred in town, getting ready for Garage Barbershop and we’ll be having a working bee to clear out the BAMM garage and turn it into a barbershop,” she said.

Also coming to BAMM is the Biennale Portrait Prize Finalist Exhibition and the Bleakley Collection exhibition, as well as the next instalment of the BAMM Concert Series with percussion virtuosi Claire Edwardes.

In recent weeks, BAMM hosted an intimate artist’s tour with Elisabeth Cummings, through her exhibition In Her Own Time followed by lunch with the artist the next day.

There was  also a sold-out solo concert with celebrated classical pianist, Simon Tedeschi.

Garage Barbershop: Get ready to learn at BAMM

Local young men are invited to join in the upcoming Garage Barbershop program. For one week, beginning June 30, BAMM’s garage will transform into a pop-up barbershop. Participants will learn how to do cuts, fades and shaves, and gain a new sense of pride, self-determination and respect.

Self-taught barber Charles Lomu with creative project manager Christian Tancred were in town recently, meeting with some community members at Chalky’s Boxing Gym, Moree Secondary College, Moree TAFE and Miyay Birray Youth Service, to connect and plan.

Volunteers are needed to help clean out the BAMM garage and get it ready for Garage Barbershop, If you can help, please contact BAMM by emailing [email protected] or calling 02 5764 0955.
