Half-time rev-up lifts Boars reserves to easy win against Boggabri

May 27, 2025

A half-time rev-up from coach Alf Newman and team manager Charlie Shearer completely turned the game around when Moree Boars reserves put on a second-half demolition to beat Boggabri Kangaroos 32-14 at Boughton Oval on Sunday.

Two quick tries to Boggabri centre Esava Nadalo gave the visitors an 8-nil lead 20 minutes into the game, with Bryce Raveneau and Cody Picker scoring for Moree late in the first-half.

Newman said Moree played scrappy football for the opening 40 minutes.

“We gave our boys an ear-bashing at half-time, and they picked it up and went from there,” Newman said.

“We played a little bit scrappy in the first half. There was a lot of dropped ball when there were chances to score, but the second half was much better, as the scoreline says, and we played all over the top of them.

“In the first half, Boggabri came out and really wanted to play, but they were a different side in the second half – and so was Moree,” he said.

Picker and Raveneau scored second-half tries, along with Lachlan McDonald and James Woodbridge, with McDonald kicking four goals.

Jarod Adams crossed for Boggabri – converted by Jayde Campbell – but the half-time rev-up was just what the doctor ordered, said team manager Charlie Shearer.

A half-time ear bashing from coach Alf Newman (left) and team manager Charlie Shearer did the trick for Moree Boars reserve-grade, who beat Boggabri Kangaroos 32-14 at Boughton Oval on Sunday.

“Our first half was very scrappy. It wasn’t good. The boys just weren’t themselves and didn’t play the footy we know they can,” Shearer said.

“Some of the boys panicked a bit, but we spoke about that at half-time and they all understood what they had to go out and do.

“They accepted the fact they needed to lift and everyone hooked in and played well in the second half, and played for each other,” he said.

Shearer said the team fought back and played well, with prop Rhys Smith a stand-out.

“Rhys had a really big game, and Richard Smith also dug in a bit, too,” Shearer said.

“Jason Humphries also played well, but he always does – never misses a beat.

“We had a really big second half and came out and got the win,” he said

Club points went to Caleb Duncan (3), Rhys Smith (2) and Robert Wade (1).

All grades play next Saturday, May 31, against North Tamworth, at Tamworth.

In other Group 4 reserve-grade matches at the weekend, Dungowan Cowboys beat Kootingal Roosters, 24-14, and Werris Creek Magpies whitewashed North Tamworth Bears, 54-4.
