TOOWOOMBA trainer Pat Webster doesn’t get to Moree races as much as he once did.
But when he does, he invariably returns home across the Darling Downs with a winner in tow.
And he was at it again when three-year-old gelding Doitlikemaxwell came from well back to narrowly win the 1400m Gwydir Maiden Plate on Tuesday.
“I still get down here a bit when the races suit – we had a winner here in December – and we get here when we can,” Webster said.
Webster, who trains a big team in Toowoomba, regularly finds the winners’ stall at city, country and provincial tracks.

Doitlikemaxwell and Clayton Gallagher narrowly win the 1400m Gwydir Maiden Plate at Moree on Tuesday.
He landed a two-state double on Tuesday when Quarter Red came from well back to win at Dalby, and has trained 15 winners across Queensland since late April.
He said Doitlikemaxwell, ridden perfectly at Moree by Clayton Gallagher, has been a bit of a learning curve for the experienced horseman.
“There’s been a bit of trial and error with this horse,” Webster said.
“We’ve had him ridden wrong because he’s won a couple of trials and shown speed.
“In the past, he’s been on the pace so today we thought we’d get back in the field, and Moree is the perfect track to do that,” he said.
Gallagher settled Doitlikemaxwell, unwanted at $13, back in the pack before swooping in the straight to collar Melanie O’Gorman’s $2.70 favourite Yanabah and score by a head.
Nikki Pollock’s Mad Harry ($7) was nearly three lengths away third.
Meanwhile, leading Tamworth trainer Cody Morgan may have unearthed another good horse when first-starter Spanish Night proved too strong in the 950m My Moree Maiden Plate after being well back early.
Ridden confidently by Morgan’s two-kilo claiming apprentice Izzy Neale, Spanish Night settled second-last in the small field, about eight lengths off the pace, before storming home in the straight to win easily.

Cody Morgan’s stable foreman Kate Alexander and stable apprentice Izzy Neale unsaddles Spanish Night after winning at Moree on Tuesday.
“I thought we were in a bit of strife at the start. He didn’t show a lot of speed,” Morgan said.
“But Izzy is really improving as a rider, and maturing. She didn’t panic and in the end, that was the difference – it was a soft win late.”
Spanish Night, plonked from $3 into $1.85 favourite, hit the line strongly to score by nearly a length from Sally Torrens’ leader Parissident ($3.50), with Toowoomba visitor Mhasahn ($6), trained by Alyssa and Troy Sweeney, half-a-length away third.
“I know it wasn’t a very strong race, but the horse definitely shows promise,” Morgan said.
“He came from an awkward position at his first start in a race to get the job done.”
