MOREE Motorcycle Club on Saturday completed the first round of its huge two-day Ironman MX Series Round 4 with all-day racing for junior and senior riders.
Today, the club steps up a notch at Boolooroo Raceway, with senior riders competing across all grades.
The all-day action starts around 9am and includes MX Pro-Class, All Powers Dash for Cash for open riders, as well as A-grade, B-grade and C-grade and Junior Lites for older junior riders.
More than 140 riders are competing at the series over two days.
Club president Matty Anderson said the Ironman MX Series Round 4 was one of Moree Motorcycle Club’s biggest events.
“It’s an inter-club series, and basically a northern New South Wales motocross championship between some of the top clubs in New South Wales,” Anderson said.
“The series is more a grassroots-based racing platform, which allows riders to transition from club level to national level riding – a first step in progressing as a rider.
“There are a lot of young riders here today (Saturday). On Sunday, it will be big bike day with adults riding, but the whole idea is for young riders coming through the ranks to compete against other clubs and other riders,” he said.
Riders across all ages and classes are competing at the newly-revamped Moree motorcycle track, about 10km north of Moree near the Boolooroo Weir on the Newell Highway.
The 2.2km Boolooroo Raceway is regarded one of the best MX tracks in Australia.
The course features fast-flowing turns mixed with some of the most spectacular jumps and obstacles in MX racing.
“Some riders will ride in multiple classes as well – there are seniors riding in three classes over the weekend. All riders have one practise session and start in three races,” Anderson said.
“Riders get points in each race and those points are carried to the next race. All points are tallied at the end of the day – if a rider wins three races, they get 75 points.
“Sunday is the big, action-packed day. There will be top-level riders, including Trent Loder and Max Anderson – two of the top Moree boys,” he said.
Trent Loder on Saturday rode in the over-30s and 40s combined class, for three wins.
“I’ve had a great day, with three good starts,” Loder said.
“I just tried to stay safe and put in a good effort – take no risks and enjoy the day.”
Today, Loder competes in the MX Pro-Class and open All Powers Dash for Cash.
“The A and B grade classes will do much longer races – 18 minutes plus two laps,” Loder said.
“The Dash for Cash will be three five-lappers, with the top three riders taking prize money.”
Loder said rider numbers were strong despite other competitions in Queensland and New South Wales this weekend.
“It’s great to get more people from outside Moree coming to ride here,” he said.
“There’s also a big event in Toowoomba this weekend, and there’s another club racing in New South Wales.
“That may have taken some riders, but we’ve still got more riders this weekend than last year,” he said.
