2025 Moree Cup

City then the bush for emerging apprentice Siena Grima this weekend

Aug 30, 2025

SYDNEY one day, Moree the next – Tamworth apprentice jockey Siena Grima will clock the miles over the next couple of days, with six rides at Rosehill Gardens today and another seven at tomorrow’s Agri Storage and Logistics Moree Cup meeting.

Grima, fresh from winning on Yanabah for boss Mel O’Gorman at Tamworth yesterday, rode her first city winner, Tanzima, at Kensington two weeks ago for Chris Waller. Three days later she finished second on Travolta at Rosehill Gardens, also for Waller.

Today, Grima reunites with Travolta in the 2000m Wests Group Macarthur Derby Handicap as well as the Waller-trained pair, Asterix and Geriatrix. She also rides Brad Widdup’s Be Real and Confess Our Dreams, and Give Me Joy in the TAB Highway Handicap for Lucy Longmire.

Tomorrow at Moree, Grima has seven rides, including top lightweight chance To Be Frank from gate 10 for Tamworth trainer Sue Grills in the 1400m Agri Storage and Logistics Moree Cup.

“To Be Frank is a lovely chance with a nice weight drop, and hopefully I can get him in a nice spot from the gate,” Grima said.

Grima, who earlier this month was named Apprentice of the Year at Bathurst Jockey Club – winning the race named in her honour – also rides Bravalatante for Brett Cavanough in the 950m 2VM NOW FM and Sparkes Jewellers Maiden Handicap, and Connie Greig’s Coastal Groove in the 1600m Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Class 1 and Maiden Plate.

“Bravalatante should run a cheeky race in that field. Brett is a good trainer and places them well. Coastal Groove is back in trip and has a good draw (1),” Grima said.

Rhodesian Diamond, now at Tamworth with Kevin Dixon, jumps from barrier 11 – a tricky gate from the 1200m start at Moree – in the Campbell’s Fuel Service and RDO Equipment Class 1 Handicap.

“He hasn’t got the best draw, but will most likely get back and be hitting the line well,” Grima said.

Ace apprentice Siena Grima at the Moree races in July. Tomorrow, she has seven rides at Moree Race Club’s signature meeting, including To Be Frank in the Agri Storage and Logistics Moree Cup for Sue Grills.

Grima jumps on Paul Isaac’s Zou de Lagos in the 1400m McGregor Gourlay and North West Events Maiden Plate, Cryptic Verse for Brodie Fenton in the 1300m Moree Services Club BM-58 Handicap and Todd Payne’s Desert Cougar in the 950m North West Ginning Class 3 Handicap.

“Zou de Lagos has a good draw (3), is first-up over 1400m and should run well,” Grima said.

“Desert Cougar won her maiden over 1000m at Tamworth and comes to a Class 3 over 950m – she’ll be hitting the line well,” Grima said.

Grima rode her 100th winner last week at Newcastle in a career that was launched at last year’s Deepwater Cup meeting, where she rode her first winner, Jakat for Ridge Wilson.

In just over 18 months, Grima has ridden 101 winners, including city success for Australia’s biggest stable.

“I’m still based in Tamworth, but hopefully will move to Sydney soon,” she smiled.
