BOOKINGS are not necessary.
That’s the “cutting” message from Bank Art Museum Moree to anyone looking for a new cut or new look.
Young locals from the Garage Barbershop team are back at BAMM tomorrow, Saturday, November 22, armed with scissors, gel and clippers – and plenty of creativity.
The team is offering free haircuts between 10am and 12.30pm, with the message “just turn up”.
“If there’s a free spot on the chair, you’re in,” BAMM director Rosie Dennis smiled.
“Those waiting for a new look, can take a leisurely stroll through the Garage Barbershop exhibition, by award-winning Australian photographer Joshua Morris if they like.”
The Garage Barbershop initiative is supported by the NSW Premier’s Department and GrainCorp, with exhibition at BAMM until January 24 next year.
Earlier this year, BAMM’s garage was transformed into a pop-up barbershop for the Garage Barbershop initiative, led by self-taught master barber and mentor Charles Lomu.

The program, designed to teach barbering skills to young men while building confidence and sense of self-respect, was documented by award-winning Australian photographer, Joshua Morris.
The project is now a photographic exhibition showcasing their journey.
“Garage Barbershop is hyper local, made right here in Moree, featuring local youth,” Ms Dennis said.
Joshua Morris is the 2018 winner of the Australian Life Photographic Prize.
He is also a three times finalist in the Australian Photography Awards, semi-finalist in the 2018 Head on Portrait competition and a finalist in the 2015 and 2016 National Photographic Portrait Prize in the National Portrait Gallery.
Charles Lomu is a self-taught master barber and mentor of the Garage Barbershop intensive workshop program, and returned to BAMM last month to open the exhibition.
“Charles is more than a barber – he’s a community builder, storyteller and artist in his own right,” Ms Dennis said.
