Moree Lions roar over Christmas

Dec 6, 2025

MOREE Lions Club is celebrating one of its biggest Christmas cake drives in history – if not the biggest – with cakes and puddings selling like, well, hotcakes.

Lions’ volunteers Darryl Brady and Will Garrett have been selling cakes and puddings at Moree’s big three – Brooker Trading Co, Café Omega and 61 Balo – on alternate days in recent weeks, with sales exceeding expectations. Mr Brady and Mr Garrett will be at 61 Balo this morning from around 8am.

“With only two or three weeks to go until Christmas, sales have gone through the chimney,” Mr Brady said.

“I want to thank all the staff at all the venues at which we’ve been selling. Everyone has been so helpful, and nothing is a problem for them – I can’t praise them enough.”

Mr Brady said the Moree community has again united for the fundraising cause.

“The entire Moree community, and visitors to town over the last few weeks during the Christmas cake drive, has been incredible,” he said.

“Even though the economy is not as good as we would like, the generosity of everyone has been amazing.

“God bless and thank-you. On behalf of Moree Lions Club, Will and I wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a safe, happy and prosperous New Year,” Mr Brady said.

Darryl and Will can be found each morning at either Café 61, Brooker Trading Co or Café Omega in the days leading up to Christmas. They’ll also be at the Jellicoe Park Moree Markets tomorrow, Sunday, December 7 and Sunday, December 21 – stock permitting.

“The cakes and puddings are selling very quickly – by far, the best year yet,” Mr Brady said.

Moree businesses and organisations have also thrown their support behind the fundraiser, with cakes and puddings all but sold out.

Moree Lion Beth Hearn said over-the-counter sales have been strong as the countdown to Christmas continues.

“All the businesses have just about sold out – the Moree community is very generous, and very supportive of the Lions’ fundraiser,” Beth said.
