TWO people have died following a crash near Narrabri overnight.
At about 1.15am today, Friday, January 23, emergency services were called to the Newell Highway, near Dog Fence Road, about 30km south of Narrabri, after reports a car and a B-double had collided before catching alight.
As at 3.30am, the Newell Highway was closed in both directions, with ongoing police investigations expected to take some time.
Emergency services and Transport for NSW personnel are at the scene drivers are advised to use diversions and follow directions on-site.
Officers from Oxley Police District attended along with NSW ambulance paramedics and Fire and Rescue NSW.
Both vehicles were destroyed and the drivers of the car and truck, both died at the scene.
They are yet to be formally identified.
The blaze reportedly spread to nearby forest and has since been extinguished.
A crime scene has been established with all lanes of the Newell Highway closed. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
Southbound traffic is being diverted via the Kamilaroi Highway and Oxley Highway and northbound via the Oxley Highway and Kamilaroi Highway.
The diversion is suitable for all vehicles and adds less than one hour to travel times.
