AFTER 10 years, Michelle Harrison is retiring from her role as CEO at Moree Care, one of the district’s most trusted, community-based not-for-profit organisations.

It’s now time to slow down a bit, travel, and finish some projects that have been sitting on the back-burner for quite a while.

“I’m planning to finish writing a film script I’m working on, start another one, go back to the Himalayas to do some more hiking and hopefully climb Mera Peak,” Michelle smiled

She said a decade working in aged acre has been incredibly rewarding.

“Working at Moree Care for the past ten years has been an unexpectedly rewarding experience, as it was a career change for me,” Michelle said.

“The appreciation of our aged, disability and transport clients for the support services they receive from Moree Care means the demands of the job are completely worthwhile.”

Moree Care is now seeking a new chief executive officer to fill Michelle’s hiking shoes, with applications now open.

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline as well as mandatory compliance checks – NDIS worker check and working with children checks as well as a driver’s licence are requirements.

Experience in business growth, physical asset management, and a track record of successful grant applications is also desirable.

“Moree Care has been enhancing lives in the Moree and Mungindi regions for more than 30 years,” Michelle said.

Moree Care is in a period of organisational consolidation and growth, and is guided by a clear strategy to navigate current major sector reforms while maintaining a deep commitment to person-centred care.

The organisation’s new CEO will lead staff through this period of consolidation and reform, towards potential organisational growth as well as provide authentic guidance to a trusted, high quality, multi-service provider.

The new CEO will also be responsible for the operational and strategic leadership of Moree Care, and will report regularly to a management committee to ensure the organisation fulfils its constitutional, contractual, legislative, legal and financial obligations.

The CEO will work in partnership with the management committee for the good governance of Moree Care and is accountable to the committee.

“Moree Care provides a range of services to enhance the quality of life of older people, younger people with disability, and the carers of both these groups, enabling them to live as independently as possible in the community,” Michelle said.

“I’m proud of my achievements in the role, with the assistance of our staff and management committee, to renovate both our Moree and Mungindi premises, increase our asset base, establish our NDIS services, and leave the organisation ready for growth opportunities in aged care.”

As CEO, Michelle managed services including in-home aged care, Meals on Wheels, disability care and community transport in Moree and Mungindi.

“It’s all been made possible to the dedicated staff employed here over the past 10 years, and the volunteer management committee members overseeing our governance, and all the volunteers who deliver our meals-on-wheels and provide volunteer driving for community transport,” she said.

The role of CEO is pivotal for a leader who can provide high-level governance, financial stewardship, and authentic staff leadership and client engagement.

Moree Care: a brief history

The foundations for Moree Care were laid nearly 40 years ago when Stella Cusack, Jay McNamara, and Lyle and Thelma Butterworth – along with members of Moree Pensioners and Superannuants – identified a need for a shopping bus for Moree pensioners.

The first shopping bus left the driveway on May 5, 1988 with five clients on board.

By the end of the 12-month pilot scheme, the service had grown to 28 clients.

A team of volunteers, mainly from Moree Lions ladies, was on hand to help. Numbers quickly grew. People enrolled to become volunteers, with many eventually becoming clients of the shopping bus.

In 1995, the organisation became an Incorporated Association to grow into what is largely today.

By 2026, Moree Care premises at 300 Edward St Moree and 84 St George St Mungindi have undergone renovation, partially funded by Commonwealth and State grants, as well as from savings. Properties have also been purchased at Jacaranda Drive and Edward Street in Moree to allow for future expansion and strengthen the organisation’s income base.
