Inverell Shire Council to host 2026 Cricket NSW Country Blitz

Apr 2, 2026

INVERELL Shire Council has confirmed it will host the 2026 Cricket NSW Country Blitz, following formal approval at the March Council Meeting.

The event will bring high‑profile state cricketers to the region for two days of community engagement, school visits, cricket clinics and promotional activities.

The Country Blitz is delivered by Cricket NSW and features contracted players from the Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, NSW Blues and NSW Breakers.

Players travel to selected regional communities to promote cricket, inspire young people and strengthen grassroots participation.

Inverell Shire mayor Kate Dight said hosting the Country Blitz is a valuable opportunity for the community and for Inverell’s sporting profile.

“This is more than a two‑day visit,” Cr Dight said.

“It’s an investment in our community, our facilities and our reputation as a capable host for major sporting events.

“Events like this inspire the next generation and strengthen our local sporting culture.

“We’re proud to work with the Inverell Sports Council and the Junior Cricket Association to bring this opportunity to life,” she said.

Inverell is expected to welcome at least two elite players, with Cricket NSW aiming to engage between 200 and 500 people across the visit.

Council will partner with the Inverell Junior Cricket Association and the Inverell Sports Council to deliver the event.

The Inverell Sports Council has committed a financial contribution of $2500, being half of the hosting fee, with Council to finance the remaining 50 per cent.

IJCA has expressed strong enthusiasm to assist with planning and delivery.

The two‑day program will include cricket clinics for young players; school visits across the Shire; media and promotional opportunities; and a potential stakeholder or community function

A final itinerary will be developed in collaboration with Cricket NSW as the event approaches.

The Country Blitz provides the opportunity to strengthen relationships with Cricket NSW, improving prospects for future state‑level events.

Cricket NSW uses the program to identify suitable hosts for larger tournaments. Securing future events would deliver significant economic and tourism benefits to the Shire.

Council will now proceed with confirming arrangements with Sports Marketing Australia and Cricket NSW.

Planning with local partners will continue in the lead‑up to the event, which will be scheduled for late July or early August, 2026.
