MOREE’S Sri Lankan community marked a vibrant and meaningful milestone by celebrating the Sri Lankan New Year on Saturday at the Moree Masonic Centre.

The event, the first of many planned gatherings, brought together families and friends to share in a rich cultural experience and introduce the wider community to the warmth and traditions of Sri Lanka.

Spokesperson Warnie Athauda said although the Sri Lankan New Year traditionally falls in April each year, the spirit of the celebration was very much alive in Moree.

“The event reflected the essence of the festival, which centres on togetherness, generosity and camaraderie.” Mr Athauda said.

“Rooted in centuries-old customs, the New Year is observed over two days, guided by auspicious times that dictate key rituals and activities, symbolising renewal and harmony.”

Attendees enjoyed an immersive cultural showcase featuring authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, traditional folk games and lively interactions that highlighted the community’s renowned hospitality.

The event offered a glimpse into the unique blend of customs defining Sri Lankan heritage, from preparing and sharing festive foods to joyfully participating in games that encourage unity and laughter.

Mr Athauda said the event was more than just a celebration.

“This gathering served as a platform to strengthen community bonds and foster cultural understanding within the broader Moree region,” he said.

“It was an opportunity for the Sri Lankan community to proudly share their identity while inviting others to experience the warmth and inclusiveness that characterise their culture.”
