Moree Boars first-grade notch 34-18 win against North Tamworth

May 12, 2026

MOREE Boars’ incredible start to the 2026 Group 4 rugby league season continued at Jack Woolaston Oval on Sunday.

After three rounds, the reigning premiers returned home to the black-soil plains with two-and-a-half wins against North Tamworth Bears.

Moree first-grade ran out strong winners, 34-18, while second-grade, coached by Alf Newman and Charlie Shearer, snatched a 30-all draw in the last minute of play.

Moree ladies tackle, coached by Lorilie Haines, went to the break trailing 12-8 but a superb second-half turnaround saw them clear away with a decisive 32-12 win.

In first-grade, winger Latrel Newman put the opening points on the board with a try in the fourth minute – converted by Mick Watton – and second-rower Brent McDonald and five-eighth Jamie Sampson added to the tally with tries in the 19th and 28th minutes.

Moree Boars’ captain-coach Jack Durheim said Sunday’s grinding game against North Tamworth produced a good win, but “ it definitely wasn’t perfect from us”.

Watton converted Sampson’s four-pointer to take the Boars to a 16-6 lead at the break.

Sampson backed up nine minutes into the second half with try number two, converted by Watton, followed by tries from winger Deriek Newman, captain-coach Jack Durheim and centre Alex Barker.

Fullback Adrian Smith converted Durheim’s try.

“We added another good win to the books. It was a tough, grinding win and definitely wasn’t perfect from us,” Durheim said.

“But to get the win regardless is rewarding and for the boys to dig deep when things weren’t always going well is a pleasing sign for me.

“Jamie Sampson was great for us and almost had a hand in every try we scored.

“He was even kind enough to throw me a late off-load for me to fall over the line and score a try,” Durheim laughed.

“We had a lot of good players across the park and the more we play together the better we are going to get.”

Moree Boars play at home this Sunday, May 17, against Kootingal Moonbi Roosters at Boughton Oval.
