Volunteers’ Week

Julie Dowleans named Narrabri Shire 2026 Volunteer of the Year Award

May 28, 2026

JULIE Dowleans has been named Narrabri Shire 2026 Volunteer of the Year this week as part of National Volunteer Week.

Narrabri Shire Council today hosted a morning tea ceremony attended by finalists, community members and representatives from a range of local organisations, all coming together to recognise the invaluable contribution volunteers make across the Shire.

Julie is well known in Wee Waa and Narrabri for her many years of involvement with the Namoi Echo Museum, as well as her 17 years contributing to 2MAX FM Community Radio.

Julie also volunteers weekly with St Vincent de Paul and has previously served as president of Relay for Life.

Her ongoing commitment across multiple organisations, and her willingness to continually show up for her community is nothing short of inspiring.

Julie, who six years ago received an Order of Australia medal for her service to the community, said she received an email a couple of weeks ago with the news she’d been nominated for the award.

“Today, along with two other wonderful Volunteers, Lauren Grant and Lyn Vaughan, I attended a lovely morning tea in Narrabri,” Julie said.

“When the general manager of Narrabri Shire Council read out the finalists and announced the winner, I was speechless and overwhelmed,” she smiled.

“Volunteers in our community are so special. They volunteer their time over many organisations and many hours to make their communities a better place to live.

“It may only be an hour or two, a day here and there, but it all adds up to make sure that what we do makes a difference.

“Having received an OAM was special, and this award today is a truly amazing honour,” she said.

Julie was joined by her fellow nominees, Lauren Grant and Lyn Vaughan, who were also recognised for their outstanding volunteerism.

Lyn has been heavily involved with the Narrabri Hospital Auxiliary, Whiddon Auxiliary and the Narrabri Garden Club.

Known for her reliability, generosity and enthusiasm, Lyn continues to make a meaningful contribution to the local community.

Lauren Grant is best known for the countless hours she dedicates to supporting the Stars of Narrabri dance event, along with the St Francis Xavier’s Dance Extravaganza.

Events like these require an enormous amount of planning, and volunteers like Lauren play an essential role in making them such a success.

Narrabri Shire Council general manager Eloise Chaplain said volunteers are the backbone of the community.

“Many of these organisations, events and sporting competitions simply wouldn’t happen without the dedication of volunteers across our Shire,” Ms Chaplain said.

“The work our residents put into supporting their community does not go unnoticed.

“It is especially encouraging to see younger residents becoming more involved and being recognised for the contribution they make to our community.

“Council congratulates Julie, Lyn and Lauren, and thanks all volunteers across the Narrabri Shire for the important role they play in strengthening the local community,” she said.

The ceremony also served as a reminder of the vital role volunteers play across the Shire, with residents encouraged to consider getting involved in local organisations and community initiatives.

From sporting clubs and local events to charities and community services, volunteering provides a rewarding opportunity to give back, connect with others and make a positive difference locally.

National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and was showcased nationwide from May 18 to May 24.

The week recognises the contribution of millions of volunteers across the country and invites everyone to discover how giving their time and talents can create connection, purpose, and stronger communities.
