There is no better place to win a premiership than home.
Moree Giants U14s had that honour at Boughton Oval on Saturday, September 19, putting the finishing touch on a superb season with a 32–12 grand final victory over GIML Magpies.
Six tries carried the Giants to the Group 19 title. Chase Picker and Jaylan Bryans crossed twice each, while Mason Legge and Preston Connors also found the line. Picker kicked two conversions and Cooper Picker added another two.
It was the final result of a season in which the young Giants proved difficult to stop. They played 12 games and lost just once, winning 10 and drawing one while piling on 502 points and conceding 158.
When the season came down to one last game on their own ground, they added another 32 points and a premiership to show for it.
GIML Magpies scored through LaBron Joyce and Angus James, with Horatio Eastwood converting both tries, but Moree had done enough to claim the title.
James Bryans and Merv Tighe coached the premiership-winning side, with Wade Taylor, Thomas Chatfield and Jock Brazel the trainers.
And Moree’s grand final day wasn’t finished.
The U16s had also earned their place in the season’s final game, giving the Giants the chance to claim two premierships on the same afternoon at Boughton Oval.
This time, only four points separated the sides.
IML Maroon took the premiership 30–26, with Moree finishing one scoring play short. The Giants had put 26 points on the board, but Maroon had found enough at the other end to take the title.
Marley Swan accounted for 14 of Moree’s points, scoring two tries and kicking three conversions. Brodie Schutt and Zac Tighe were also among the Giants’ try scorers.
IML Maroon crossed six times through Murray Barnes, Toby Morgan, Kaydon Roberts, Dan Bell, Linc Sharpley and Zak Hubner. Sharpley added three conversions.
For the U16s, the result ended a season which produced seven wins from 12 games and took them all the way to the grand final. They scored 350 points across the campaign and conceded 214.

The two grand finals brought very different endings for the Giants. The U16s finished just four points short of a premiership, while the U14s had every reason to celebrate on their home ground.
Their season had delivered 10 wins, one draw and just one loss. They had scored more than 500 points and earned their place in the biggest game of the year.
Then, with the premiership on the line at Boughton Oval, they scored six more tries and finished the job.
